300 Offaly Soldiers Who Fought In The US Civil War 1861-1865 – Now Available On AmericasOffalyHeroes.com

Today we have reached the 300 mark for names added to our site of Offaly born soldiers who fought in the US Civil War between 1861 & 1865. Each soldier has a dedicated page with any available details we could find added to give a picture of their lives and service. If anyone has any details they could add on any individual please do let us know.

1 – The number of US Medal of Honor Medal Winners added to our site. His name was Samuel Belton Horne and he was originally from the Ferbane area. (There is an article available to read about the life of Samuel Belton Horne)

2 – The number of soldiers we have discovered so far whose graves are located back in their native Offaly in Ireland. One was a Union soldier and the other a Confederate soldier. (There is an article available on the story of these 2 men – Two Offaly Men who fought on opposite sides in the US Civil War are buried in their native County In Ireland – Americasoffalyheroes)

6 – The number of Offaly born men we have uncovered who served in the US Navy during the Civil War.

9 – The number of Offaly soldiers with the surname “Cleary”. The most common surname we have found during our research. Although we often found this name spelled “Clary”.

16 – The number of Offaly born men we have uncovered so far who fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. (Here is a story about 2 Confederate soldiers – Dan & Edward Behan from Edenderry)

27 – Sets of Brothers we have currently discovered who fought in the Civil War. (This is a story about one set of Brothers who fought – The Banagher Brothers – Thomas & Keeran McKenny)

30 – The number of men who served as Cavalry soldiers in the Civil War. (We have an article about one of those Cavalry soldiers – William Creevy – A Cavalry Soldier From Offaly Who Served For 25 Years In The US Army)

40 – The number of soldiers from Birr in Offaly who fought in the Civil War. The most from any Offaly town so far in our research. (This is a story of one of those Birr soldiers. The Story Of Michael Briscoe, Our First Civil War Soldier From Birr)

75 – This is currently the number of names available to search that are categorized as “Unknown Within Offaly”, which means we have evidence that these men were from County Offaly but where exactly we have yet to pinpoint. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

80 – The number of Offaly soldiers who served in regiments raised in New York. The highest representation from our list so far.

102 – The oldest age of a surviving soldier we discovered. (Owen Bracken (1820-1922). At 102 He Was One Of Offaly’s Last Surviving Soldiers Of The US Civil War)

284 – The number of Offaly born men we have uncovered so far who fought in the Union Army during the Civil War

At present we have over 225 more names yet to be added to our list of Offaly soldiers. Hopefully we will have all completed over the next 2 Months. Thanks to everyone who has visited the site.

      1. Will have to go and visit his grave. I also have a location of Thomas hoy home place in daingean will have to go there and get a photo ruins are still there I’m told. Once again guys great work.
