John Renehan, a Sergeant in Company H of the 1st Artillery Regiment, witnessed the first shots of the US Civil War at Fort Sumter in April 1861. Born in Offaly, Ireland, he served valiantly during the conflict, later re-enlisting after the fort’s surrender. He died prematurely from heart disease in January 1866.
Edward Ging, born in 1847, lied about his age to enlist in the Union Army at 14. He survived major Civil War battles, later became a successful hotel and saloon owner in Greenport, New York, and passed away in 1924.

His story reveals an amazing connection to a fellow Offaly man who was a Union soldier manning the guns inside the walls of Fort Sumter. But did these two men know each other ?

Michael Dooling, born in Tullamore, Offaly in 1835, enlisted in the 2nd California Infantry but deserted shortly after. He was imprisoned on Alcatraz, later transferred to Camp Reynolds, and returned to service before being discharged in 1866. Dooling lived in St. Louis and died in Leavenworth in 1915, unmarried.
