New Information On The Fate Of James Stones – Clara Born Union Soldier.

Today we luckily found a new piece of information in relation to our latest story published last Friday,7th August 2026. The article in question attempted to unravel the story of Clara born brothers James and Patrick Stones who both fought in Maine regiments during the US Civil War. At the time of writing we did not have exact details on the final fate of James Stones. We knew he had been wounded at the Battle of Gaines Mill on the 27th June 1862 and succumbed to those wounds a short few weeks later.

The new information comes in the form of a fascinating newspaper article from August 1862 that has answered all our questions. Captain Daniel White (a man would later rise to the rank of General) was a member of the same regiment as James Stones and on the 29th July 1862 he took the time to write to Bangor Daily Whig and Courier Newspaper recounting what he knew of the fate of James Stones.

We can now say, as a result of this information, that James Stones was captured by Confederate forces after receiving a severe leg and a seemingly spiteful bayonet wound during The Battle of Gaines Mill . He was then placed in a Confederate field hospital in the Richmond area where he later died. James was buried in a make shift hospital cemetery.

After the war almost 6,000 soldiers buried in the Richmond area in similar fashion were exhumed and re-interred in the the newly created Richmond National Cemetery. We know a total of 556 Union remains were disinterred from burial pits near the Richmond City Hospitals and reburied here as unknowns. James Stones from Clara in County Offaly, Ireland was very likely one of these soldiers.
