NOT EVERYONE IS A HERO IN BATTLE

The things we come across when researching a soldier !!

Martin Hart was born in Birr in 1821 and has just been added to our site. Not every soldier we come across are praised for their gallant and brave actions in the heat of battle.

Martin Hart’s commanding officer Lieutenant RW McClean was not happy with Martin’s performance during the heavy fighting at The Battle of Stones River in January 1863 and makes a point of singling him out for his “ungallant” conduct.

For Martin Hart this would not be an isolated incident as another report we came across states that he “went missing” during The Battle Of Chickamauga in September 1863. Who is to say how anyone would act in the face of, what was then, the most bloodiest war in human history. Martin Hart would survive the war and is mustered out of service in October 1864 and would return to his wife and children in Columbus, Ohio. Martin died in 1878 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
