Thomas Flynn, born in Banagher in 1845, served as a Sergeant in the 62nd New York Infantry during the Civil War, enlisting at 15. He died in 1873 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York. His parents were Susan Hill and James Flynn, also a Civil War soldier.

James Flynn from Banagher enlisted in the Union Army to find his son, Thomas, who joined at 14. James served as a hospital steward, while Thomas was promoted to sergeant. Despite letters exchanged, they never reunited. James was captured and likely imprisoned at Andersonville, never returning home to his family.
