James Flynn, born in Banagher in 1820, served in the Union Army during the Civil War, initially enlisting in the 1st New York Cavalry and later transferring to the 7th New Hampshire Infantry. He was reported missing in action after the Battle of Olustee in March 1864. Flynn, also known as John Hill, had familial ties to other soldiers.

James Flynn from Banagher enlisted in the Union Army to find his son, Thomas, who joined at 14. James served as a hospital steward, while Thomas was promoted to sergeant. Despite letters exchanged, they never reunited. James was captured and likely imprisoned at Andersonville, never returning home to his family.
