Thomas Claffey – From Ferbane, County Offaly. Served In the 13th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the US Civil War 1861-1865.

Thomas Claffey, a Union soldier from County Offaly, Ireland, served in the Civil War and was injured, losing his left leg. After the war, he lived as a farm laborer and entered the Milwaukee Soldiers Home in 1887. Claffey died in 1892 and was buried in Wood National Cemetery, leaving behind a family connection in Ireland.

SAMUEL BELTON HORNE – MEDAL OF HONOR WINNER BORN IN FERBANE, COUNTY OFFALY

On September 29, 1864, Samuel Belton Horne, an Irish-born soldier, displayed remarkable bravery at the Battle of Chapin’s Farm despite being injured. He delivered a crucial message after being crushed by his horse. Horne was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1897, recognizing his heroism during the Civil War, where he fought valiantly.
