Edenderry’s Civil War Heroes

The Ryan family from Edenderry, County Offaly, left an indelible mark on American history during the Civil War. Four brothers—Michael, Patrick, Peter, and James—fought on opposing sides, reflecting the divided loyalties of Irish immigrants in the United States. Michael, Patrick, and Peter served in the Confederate Army, with Patrick killed at Morton’s Ford and Peter dying later from injuries sustained in battle. James, the youngest, joined the Union Army and settled in Washington, D.C., after the war.

Their sisters also married men who served: Thomas Walsh, a Union soldier, and Thomas J. Hogan, a Confederate soldier captured at Spotsylvania. This extraordinary family’s story highlights the sacrifices and complexities faced by Irish immigrants in 19th-century America.
