In January 1863 at Camp Banks, Baton Rouge, Thomas Flanagan, originally from Clara in County Offaly was involved in a violent altercation with his commanding officer Henry C. Abbot. What led these two men to such a violent situation? What is the outcome? Is all as it seems?
Born in Clara, County Offaly, Ireland James Dargin enlisted in the 1st New Jersey Infantry Regiment under the alias of James Molloy in April of 1864. He was killed on the first day of The Battle of The Wilderness on the 5th May 1864. His decision to enlist under an alias would lead to difficulties when his wife tried to claim the Widows Pension and would ultimately follow him to his grave.
A significant milestone was achieved with the addition of 400 Offaly-born men who served in the US Civil War, anticipating at least 150 more names. Key statistics include a Medal of Honor winner, Colonels, and various service roles. Efforts continue to uncover more identities and stories of these soldiers.
On July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg, eleven soldiers from Offaly were either killed or wounded, marking a tragic day in the region’s history. Among them, Barney Horan and James Egan were both wounded and died later in a Gettysburg hospital on the same day. Ongoing research continues to uncover more details about Offaly soldiers involved.
