The Civil War Battles Map
This interactive map shows key battles of the American Civil War (1861–1865), plotted geographically to illustrate how the conflict unfolded across the United States.

Connecting Battles to People
While this map focuses on where and when battles occurred, it also forms part of a new and ongoing research project to link these engagements to individual soldiers with Irish and Offaly connections.
This work is actively in progress. Many soldiers have already been identified, while others are still being researched as records continue to be reviewed and cross-referenced.
Where possible, battle data is being linked to:
- regimental histories
- service and enlistment records
- pension files
- memorial and burial information
Over time, this will allow visitors to move beyond dates and places, and understand who was there, what they experienced, and how global migration connected local Irish communities to American history.
About the Data
- Battle locations, dates, and summaries are compiled from established historical sources
- Geographic coordinates are used to place each battle as accurately as possible
- Some battles lasted multiple days; others were single-day engagements
- As research continues, additional connections and corrections will be added
Where further detail is available, battles may link to:
- individual soldier profiles
- regimental background pages
- external historical references for further reading
A Living Project
This map is intended as a living resource. New battle info, soldiers, and historical connections will continue to be added as research develops and new information becomes available.
