Today we can add more information to the story of Clara born Union soldier, James Stones. A letter written in August 1862 by one of his fellow regiment members reveals the true fate of James.
Richard Cusack, born in 1834 in Offaly and later settling in New Jersey, served as a sergeant in the 39th New Jersey Infantry during the US Civil War. A painted photograph captures him at ease with fellow soldiers in 1864. Cusack survived the war, passing away in 1901, and is remembered for his service.
James Murray, born in Philipstown, Offaly, Ireland, served in the 86th New York Infantry for four months during the US Civil War. He enlisted in January 1864, experienced combat at the Battle of Spotsylvania, and was killed shortly thereafter at age 34. His final resting place is likely Fredericksburg National Cemetery.
On June 3, 1864, during the Battle of Cold Harbor, Union General Grant ordered a disastrous frontal assault on Confederate positions, resulting in approximately 7,000 Union casualties. Corporal Thomas Flattery was among the wounded and later died. The attack led to significant criticism of Grant’s tactics and jeopardized Lincoln’s reelection chances.
