John J. Bermingham

John J. Bermingham, born in 1845 in Lusmagh, Ireland, served in the Union Army’s 6th New York Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. He witnessed President Lincoln’s assassination in 1865 and participated in his funeral’s Honor Guard. He died in 1939 and is buried in St. Peters Cemetery, New York.

John J Birmingham, a Civil War soldier from Lusmagh County Offaly, was on duty at Ford’s Theatre when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. Birmingham lived until 1939, often reflecting on his experiences of that tragic night and the impact it had on American history.
