Marcus Beresford Monck
Marcus Beresford Monck (1832-1862), known as Marcus Monck, was born in Banagher and later resided in New York. He served as a captain in the 11th New York Volunteers. Monck died from burns sustained while attempting to rescue a woman and child in a hotel fire just before the Civil War.

Marcus Monck – A Brave Banagher Soldier
Captain Marcus Beresford Monck, born in 1832 in Ireland, emigrated to the US and joined the army, achieving the rank of Captain in the 11th New York Volunteers. Tragically, he died from burns sustained while rescuing a woman and child from a fire, never seeing battle. His bravery is remembered today.
